More Suggestions for Cheap Traveling But at What Price?

While surfing on the web trying to find news or articles about travel I found “Taking Advantage of Last-Minute Travel Bargains,” a travel article in Los Angeles Times.

From an editor’s perspective, I think it lacks many aspects to make it successful for the reader.

  • First, the first letter of each word of the title should be capitalized.
  • Second, there are no visuals.
  • Third, the article starts in a very unappealing way.

The first word of the first paragraph says “Question:” but actually there is no question but only a description afterwards. The second paragraph start with the word “Answer,” when actually it’s an introduction to the story, and in my view, is written in a very unfortunate way. The writer starts talking about the travel industry, which would have made me stop reading immediately if I wouldn’t have had to analyze it for this blog. The reasons I would stop reading this article are display bellow.

Not only the content is weak but so are the structure and design. The typography is small and sometimes condensed in big blocks, making its readability difficult.

On one hand, there are many links to take the user to their recommendations; on the other hand, the aren’t incorporated within the words but the url structure is written on the following text, ruining, even more, the design of the site.

Last, the writer, Catharine Hamm, is telling the story of a couple, and she repeatedly uses this type of phrase: “Second, she says, social media are your friend.” When she should put the attribution in the end of the sentence to give it more strength. And the writer should also use the last names of the people interviewed, not just the feminine or masculine subject.

Overall, I think this article is very poor in all aspects an editor have to be aware of. Aspects such as content, structure, design and visuals.

Africa for Short Budgets

We’ve already heard of cheap traveling, but there are some trips that when we think of them, we don’t think are cheap. We think they are really expensive because of the distance or the amount of time one has to stay in those places to be able to get a real sense of what it is about. Island, Patagonia, Africa, or Australia, are examples of far-away countries that require money investment. And who doesn’t want to go to wild, exotic and beautiful countries? I do.

The New York Times has made Seth Kugel’s story into a travel advice section in their newspaper.

Kugel traveled on his own in the Africa bush. During his trip he only used a tiny $23-a-day Fiat for travel and his inventiveness. In his trip, Kugel filmed videos of him saving money in his traveling. The New York Times has posted this video, and also an article about Kugel’s experience, written by himself.

This kind of article offers an unusual way of suggesting how to travel in a specific country from a newspaper perspective, and I think, they hit the mark with great effectiveness. People usually love features stories or stories about people, moreover if they have visual elements like Kugel’s story, which are much better for engaging the user.

Paragraphs are short and full of links to get further information, which makes the story flow. Furthermore, at the end of the story, Kugel has a list of tips about traveling in Africa for small pockets that he created by himself. It has many links to support what he is saying.

Overall, this article has a very creative way of giving advice about traveling and from a different point of view. I have to add that at the end of the article, there is a correction of an earlier version, which makes the source trustful.

The Perfect Day

There are many ways of suggesting how to spend a perfect day in a city when traveling, but not every recommendation gives a different perspective to everyone’s taste. Time magazine gives the best solution: Different viewpoints from those who know how to spend the perfect day, in this case, Miami.

Four famous people from Miami tell how they spend their perfect day in Miami. Each of them is completely different from the previous one. The reader can choose the story, which best suits their needs. It’s worthwhile. The reader does not have to follow only one perspective but can also follow different ones and even combine them. Each short story engages the reader. First, who tells the story is a well-known person. Second, there is storytelling. And people love stories about people. They tell their typical day in Miami. Where they go for dinner, what activities they do, where they relax, where they go out. Everything. And last, it’s lively. They get to the point quickly and write with the reader in mind.

But it’s not just the storytelling that engages the reader. Every activity or restaurant mentioned in the reading is linked to get further information about the activity or place. Paragraphs should be short but full of details. They also link to other similar stories by Time, which helps to build the Time website.

In my view, the way Time tells about a city is innovative and will help it to bring new audiences to their travel section. The only thing I miss in the article are some images or other visuals.

Where to Go

There are several suggestions that one can find on the web when looking for the perfect travel destination. In my view, however, there are not too many that can provoke a visual impact and engage like the list made by The New York Times, called “52 Places to Go in 2014.”

This list is within the travel section of The New York Times, but how it is placed into the website is completely different from the rest of online newspaper content. It is interactive. The reader can play with the content. Nowadays the viewer’s role is essential in the digital content, so letting the viewer choose what countries to see on the Web, or what activity they are looking for to do while traveling, holds the attention of the reader.

The structure of the list is clear. It makes the content easy to read and scroll to whatever the reader is interested in. The users can personalize their visit along the list of places to visit.

Each of the travel destinations come accompanied by an image or a short clip of video. And each of them is beautiful, which makes the viewer thirsty for more content like that.  But it’s not until the user scrolls down past the visual content when they can read about where the media was taken. That gives the site more control, and prolongs the surprise.

When the users get to the description of the place, it is described in two or three paragraphs, which is essential to keep the audience reading until the end. The block of text also has many links to get further information, which always helps the site to promote itself.

At the end of the travel list, there is a section for comments from users and share buttons for social networks, which will motive the audience to come to this site. Likewise, they have written the corrections they have done in the publication since it was published, which gives creditability to the online site.

Traveling is ambiguous.

It is cheap. It is expensive. It is fun. It is boring. It is adventure. It is safe. It is difficult. It is easy.

It all depends on the traveler.

There are many ways of traveling, and how people decide to travel will determine the trip. In this blog, we’ll look into the ultimate way of traveling: budget travel, which in my view is the way people experience the most during their travel.

There are many different sites to get the best ideas and tips for traveling. One of such blogs can be found at  www.ytravelblog.com

This blog provides travel tips, travel destinations, things to see and do, places to stay, eat and drink, and travel planning; to help people to travel more and more often.

The headline, “How to Safe Money on Travel – 52 Ideas,” is clear and related to the content the owners of the blog that talks about. The writers provide a list with the best tips for traveling, which they related to another source they link in the blog.

In the beginning of the post they start with a short introduction to catch the attention of  the reader by answering the importance of having in mind these suggestions when traveling. They use short blocks of paragraphs and make bold statements in every block, which makes it easy for the users to scroll and read what they are interested in.

The content is compelling and reliable. They use their own experiences to illustrate the material and also link to more information about the tips.

The writing style is a bit informal. Sometimes they over use exclamations points and question marks to, I guess, stress what they are saying. I think they should strive for polish and sharpness in their writing.

Also, they should include more visuals. They post some beautiful travel pictures that give a real sense of what they are talking about, however, they need to include videos and audio to make the blog more compelling.

Overall, I think they engage the reader by using direct writing and active voice. It is well organized, they use an ordered list of ideas to catch the reader’s attention, and it also moves the reader smoothly to the next point.
